Welcome

Helping people achieve their full potential

"The most profound teaching in martial arts is not how to defend yourself or how to win, but how to find yourself and how to live."

GM Young S. Kim

Welcome to Young S. Kim's Family Martial Arts Center. It is our pleasure to help you find the benefits of Martial Arts training in your life. Unlike the movie-based stereotype, Martial Arts does not revolve around fighting, but is a discipline and a way of life. It enables people of all ages to reach their full potential, both physically and mentaly. At our center, we teach two Korean styles of Martial Arts, Taekwondo and Hapkido, in an organized curriculum and with a caring, enthusiastic attitude. Our center is headed by Grandmaster Young S. Kim, a 9th degree black belt in Taekwondo and Hapkido with over 60 years of teaching experience. Classes are taught personally by Grandmaster Young S. Kim and a staff of trained instructors in a safe and fun environment. The lessons are designed to not only keep you fit, but also to emphasize discipline, respect, teamwork and attitude. Our teaching methods in self-defense are not geared for attack, but for the development of self-control and confidence to improve the "inner" self. We invite you to join us in the journey towards black belt excellence.

Benefits

Our Locations

What we do, we do it with much love and gratitude

"The most meaningful martial arts journey that you can ever take is the one of self-growth. Every single thought, word, and action should be geared for this purpose!"

GM Young S. Kim

We are passionate about helping people find their full potential, including health, fitness, self-defense, happiness, peace, and/or whatever that may entail. We do that by using Martial Arts movements and techniques. Our upbringing, education, beliefs, and values have armed us to deal with everyday life but has done nothing to answer our most fundamental needs for physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health and growth. Through our guidance, we help people find their full potential so they can find in themselves everything that was, is, and will be needed in their lives. We have been blessed with endless abundance and expansion, but unfortunately, because of education and beliefs, we have built so many walls that prevent us from reaching our full potential. Through this journey, we guide our students so they learn finally how to be all they can be and how to live full, whole lives.

Changing lives one person at the time!

"A great warrior does not fight with his sword, but with his heart. The path to righteousness is his only worthy fight!"

GM Young S. Kim

Training in the Martial Arts is a fun and effective way to stay fit and develop discipline, self-confidence and perseverance. Our professional instructors work with children and adults of all ages to teach fighting and self-defense techniques, and to develop character in the students. All classes are taught personally by Grandmaster Young S. Kim and a staff of qualified instructors in a safe and fun environment.

Martial Arts are an excellent aerobic exercise and a great way to get fit. In addition, we teach the history, philosophy, traditions and values of the Martial Arts so students get the full flavor of what real Martial Arts are.

In some cases, advanced students who are not black belts can begin assisting the head instructor and teaching beginner students. All our instructors can also communicate clearly and are comfortable and confident teaching large groups.

We invite you to come and see our classes and join us in a journey that may change your life forever!

We teach Taekwondo and Hapkido, both Korean Martial Arts. Following is a brief description of both of them.

Taekwondo

The Taekwondo is a former Korean art of self defense. Translated literally, Taekwondo means "the art of fighting with the foot and the hand". This art is the last thing in self defense and physical aptitude for men and women of all the ages. Across the scientific use of the body in forms and skills, the Taekwondo points to develop the character of the person who participants. The practice of this art demands vigorous and persevering training; his rumuneration is the auto confidence, physical aptitude, mental awakening, leadership, patience and respect.

Hapkido

HAP means: United, together, coordinated. Designating the union and the harmonization of my body, my energy and my spirit, with me itself, my opponent and the universe.
KI means: Energy, breath, spirit. Japanese word that represents the intial demonstrated energies of material and spiritual origin.
DO means: Way, route, path. Japanese common term to several martial Japanese and Korean arts, based on the thought of the Taoism and the Zen Buddism. It means the route, the direction, the way, the sense or clearer; the search of the lighting, the autorealization and the understanding that leads us to the origin (The Tao).

Origin:
The Hapkido was born in South Korea, in 1958, with the Great Teacher Yong Sul Choi, who fused the martial traditional Japanese art (Daito Rui Aiki Jutsu) with several martial traditional Korean arts (Taekyon, Hwarang, Subak).

Description:
The Hapkido is like a spider in his spiderweb, where it waits to his prey to wrap it between his threads and this way to conquer it. One does not fight against the force of the opponent; one harmonizes with it, flows with smoothness and harmony, this way to control it.
A martial art with soft skills - circular and hard - straight, where his student discovers that they are training 2 different but tied styles.

Characteristics:
Hapkido has 270 basic techniques. They qualify in 3 catagories:

- Empty hand against empty hand
- Empty hand against weapon
- Weapon against weapon

Each of these catagories divide in skills of defense and assault, executed in several positions (foot, knelt down, seated and stretched out), and includes grasps (keys, throwing, strangulations and immobilizations) and knocks (hands, feet, head and joints/ shoulders, elbows, wrists, hip and knees), that are divided into skills of point (prick), line (knocking), and circle (to cut). These skills manage to reach approximately 3,864 variants, which give origin to more than 10,000 combinations, which gives an infinite flexibility to the Hapkido.
